Richard Serra Collection

Best known for his monumental site-specific installations, Serra was a leading figure of the Postminimalist art movement during the 1960s and 1970s, known for utilizing industrial materials such as iron, lead, and steel to produce awe-inspiring artworks that redefined the formal and conceptual potential of sculpture.

As a printmaker and draftsman, Serra was equally prolific, creating exquisite large-scale monochromatic works on paper using oil-based paint stick and various graphic techniques, from etching to lithography, screenprinting, and photogravure. Representing nearly the entirety of Serra’s graphic oeuvre, this collection includes some of the artist’s earliest and most notable prints and editions.

Prior to this donation, the museum had previously acquired one drawing, four prints, and one sculpture by Serra, and some of these works were donated by Mr. Schupf. Cataloguing of the Schupf bequest is ongoing and will be available via the museum’s online collection search upon completion.
