The Lunder Collection at the Colby College Museum of Art is world renowned for its holdings of art from the United States. Yet its scope is far broader, encompassing artworks that span cultures and time periods—from ancient Chinese ceramics and European Old Master prints to nineteenth-century French painting and sculpture and international contemporary art. With more than fourty works, including recent acquisitions, in a range of media and that span the years 618 to 2019, Global Crossings: Selections from the Lunder Collection offers a rare opportunity to encounter pieces by well-known figures such as Ai Weiwei, Mary Cassatt, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt van Rijn, Auguste Rodin, and James McNeill Whistler. Together, these objects serve as rich resources for teaching and learning and remind us that American art has never been produced in a vacuum but rather has always been part of an international creative network. The biographies of the included artists reveal that national designations can—and often do—contain a multitude of geographic experiences.
